Source:
A hard black glossy crystal. Its hardness is lower than that of industrial diamonds but higher than that of silicon carbide. Compared to most ceramics, it has lower brittleness. It has a large thermal neutron capture cross-section. It is highly resistant to chemical action. It is not eroded by hot hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid. It dissolves in molten alkali but is insoluble in water and acid. Relative density (d204) is 2.508 to 2.512. Melting point is 2350°C. Boiling point is 3500°C.
